How Obsidian and AI inspired Today in toodoori
Today in toodoori started with watching how people around me managed tasks in Obsidian with AI tools. Their daily Markdown files helped me identify two things I wanted to make easier in toodoori: choosing today’s tasks and keeping notes beside them.
What I saw in Obsidian
They kept a Markdown file for each date. In it, they listed unfinished work and tasks for the day. When they needed to take meeting notes or write something down, they used the same file.
They also gave their AI tools standing instructions to update task statuses in that file whenever they worked on a task. The AI tools could edit the same text the people read and used to manage their work.
Choosing today’s tasks in toodoori
toodoori already let people combine stages and automation rules to gather today’s tasks. But that required knowing how those features worked. I wanted someone opening a project for the first time to be able to review unfinished tasks and choose what to do today.
That became Today, alongside Unfinished and All in the project’s board navigation. Each project has its own Today view. Unfinished tasks due today or earlier appear automatically. You can also add tasks manually, including ones with a later due date or no due date.
Due dates and manual choices both matter here. A deadline tells you when something is due. You may want to work on it earlier, or choose something that has no deadline at all. Selecting it for Today leaves its due date unchanged.
Manual selections apply to that day. The next day, you can review unfinished tasks you selected yesterday and choose which ones to continue. You can use Today without connecting an AI tool.
Why Today is separate from stages
Making Today a stage would create a problem: moving a task to In Progress would remove it from today’s list. A task already in progress would have to change stages just to appear there.
So Today is separate from stages. Selecting a task for the day keeps it in its current stage. As you work, you can move it through the stages without losing your selection for today.
The project memo and Inbox
The meeting notes in those Markdown files also influenced the design of the project memo. Use it for meeting notes or information you want to refer to while the board is open. You can move and resize it to fit your screen. It stays with the project across days, so you can keep using the same notes tomorrow.
The existing Inbox lets you jot down a new request, idea, or task with a title and optional content, then organize it later. You can also add Inbox tasks to Today.
